FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What file formats do you accept as artwork?

We accept macromedia freehand files, versions 5.5 through MX and Adobe Illustrator up to version CS. A free 30 day trial version of Illustrator is available from their website if you are new to the world of label design.

Can you accept CAD files?

CAD files cannot be used as artwork. They can be used as die outlines for cutting or a basic guide for creating label artwork. We can accept a DXF file for the purpose of creating artwork but you will incur an artwork charge for the steps necessary to convert it to useable artwork. If the design is too complex it may not be possible to redraw it accurately.

What is the smallest text size you can print?

We can print as small as 5 point text in sans serif faces such as Arial or Helvetica, and 6 point in serif fonts such as Times.

Do you accept jpeg, gif or tiff files as artwork?

It depends on the printing method and the resolution of your artwork file. If the final product is a laser printed paper label, and the file is 300 dpi or greater, it should be useable. The artwork must be provided at 100% size and include an 1/8 inch of bleed along any cut edges. If the image is a gif taken from the internet (such as a logo from a webpage) it is most likely only 72 dpi and not suitable for printing. If the image is intended to be screen printed on plastic vector artwork is preferred.

Why do printers bill art charges even though most art is submitted electronically?

There are many reasons why additional work may be required before your file can be printed. Traps need to be added where colors meet, to compensate for any misalignment during printing. The artwork also needs to be repeated in groups on the sheet. These modifications are usually fairly straightforward and simple. Although, occasionally much more work must be done to art files in order to organize the files for printing. This work is time consuming and costly. By working together early in the project, we can often help you minimize these costs.

What is a vector file?

A vector file is made with software such as Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand. A vector file can be printed as solid spot colors and scaled infinately larger without losing print quality.

What is a raster file?

A raster file is usually a jpeg, tiff or gif. A raster file needs to be printed as 4 color process dots rather than solid color. If made larger than its original size, this type of file will lose resolution and print quality.
